Marriage Certificate

Vital Statistics has birth, marriage and death records from 1892 to the present. Please contact our office at (709) 729-3308. For records prior to 1892, please contact the provincial archives (the Rooms) at (709) 757-8088.

How to Order a Marriage Certificate Online

You may use this service to complete a marriage certificate order online for events that have been registered in Newfoundland and Labrador. To use this service please visit the Vital Statistics Division - Online Services.

How to Order a Marriage Certificate by Mail

You may apply for a marriage certificate by sending a completed application opens new window (40 KB) form to Vital Statistics Division.

To enhance the privacy and security of a person's identity, entitlement restrictions apply for marriage certificates. See "Who is Entitled" section below.

As well, persons applying for marriage certificates are required to provide identification:

  • one piece of photo ID; or
  • two pieces of other ID, at least one of which contains signature or address.

How to Order a Marriage Certificate In Person

You may apply in person at any of the following Government Service Centres or departmental offices:

  • Mount Bernard Avenue, Sir Richard Squires Building, Corner Brook, NL.
  • 35 Alabama Drive, Stephenville, NL.
  • Viking Mall, St. Anthony, NL.
  • 2 Tenth Street, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.
  • 118 Humphrey Road, Bruno Plaza, Labrador City, NL.

As well, persons applying for marriage certificates are required to provide identification:

  • two pieces of other ID, at least one of which contains signature or address.

If you apply for the marriage certificate in Mount Pearl, there is approximately a 20 minute waiting period. If you apply in Gander, Corner Brook, Clarenville or Grand Falls-Windsor, you are still able to get them in the same day. If you apply at any of the remaining offices, there is approximately a three day waiting period. Note: Processing times are approximate and will change depending on the volume of applications received.

Who is Entitled to Apply for a Marriage Certificate

  • Either party to the marriage
  • A person with written authorization from a party to the marriage
  • A person with a court order
  • When both parties to the marriage are deceased (proof of death is required)
    • The children or parent of the deceased party;
    • the executor, trustee or administrator of the estate; or
    • a person with written authorization from one of the above

Be sure to include the following information:

  • Name of Both Parties to the Marriage
  • Sex
  • Birthplace
  • Date and Place of Marriage
  • Your complete mailing address and telephone number and state your relationship to the person named on the certificate if, for any reason, you are not that person.
  • Photocopies of ID's

Marriage Certificates are only available in long form, framing size and cost $20.00. Cheques or money orders may be made payable to the Newfoundland Exchequer Account. If you are paying by credit card, we accept only Visa and MasterCard. We require the card number, expiry date and signature of the cardholder.
