How to Notify Motor Registration of a Vehicle Sold.

A Notice of Sale form is provided on the front right-hand portion of your vehicle registration permit and must be filled out or a letter can be given containing the:

  • Description of vehicle ie. Plate number, serial number, make, model, year
  • Date of sale,
  • Name and address of purchaser
  • Signature of registered owner
  • Driver licence number or date of birth of the purchaser if available.

A Notice of Sale must be submitted in writing, and is accepted by mail, fax, or in person at any of the Motor Registration Division processing offices. A Notice of Sale cannot be accepted by telephone.

Notification Deadline

A Notice of Sale is required to be filed by the seller within 10 days of the date of sale of a vehicle and may be sent to any Motor Registration Office in the province. A Notice of Sale relieves the seller of any further legal responsibilities for the vehicle.

Importance of Filing a Notice of Sale

It is very important that you file a Notice of Sale with Motor Registration Division. After the Notice of Sale if filed the purchaser's name and address is attached to the vehicle record. The Notice of Sale ensures that you will not be held responsible for any tickets issued to the vehicle if the purchaser fails to transfer the vehicle. As well, if the vehicle is involved in an accident, the owner will be contacted.
